Study Guide Self Assessment
Use the Study Guide to self-assess.  Go through, and next to each number, do the following:
  1. STAR if you think you could answer this right now, without studying
  2. SQUARE if you think you  could answer this with just a little review
  3. X if you need to study this quite a bit

Prioritize!

On the back of your study guide, make a list of three topics, divided by their self-assessment categories.  The stuff that should go on your index cards are the things with Xs by them!

Individual Review
For this option, you will work individually.  You should follow these steps:
  1. Step 1: Go through the study sheet.  Using your notes, and the resources I have linked on the docs page of this DP, create a new set of notes that specifically answers each of the study questions on the study guide.
  2. Step 2: For the following three items on the study guide, write sample examples.  Get together with a small group and use the examples to practice:
    1. For an example given to you, identify if the person dealt with cognitive dissonance by changing their behavior, changing their beliefs, or changing their perception of their behavior.
    2. For an example given to you, identify if it shows hostile or instrumental aggression
    3. For an example given to you with descriptions of two people, explain which people would be most likely to be attracted to each other, and what factors are at play in their attraction.
  1. Step 3: Now, using your new notes from the study guide, create a set of study materials.  Flash cards, Quizlet, index card, whatever helps you the best.  Use them!

Romantic Relationships

 Romantic Relationship Cycles/Stages:
You have all class today to finish your flow chart/diagram/explanation of how romantic love proceeds. This needs to be easily understandable to anyone else, and neat, so if you did a crappy draft yesterday to get your ideas out, today you need to revise for quality and presentation.
  1. Develop a theory of how romantic relationships start and then proceed.
  2. You may list and describe stages, draw a flow diagram, or identify general processes that occur.
  3. Get creative!  Cartoons, flow charts, collages, writing…it’s all fair game.
  4. Consult friends and relatives!
  5. DUE:  End of class Friday

BBC Series Part 3
As you complete your cycles/stages, I'll have a BBC documentary playing that discusses 4 couples in various stages of romantic love.  Feel free to work this into your diagram!  If you were absent, you can find this on the Docs page.

On Monday, we will discuss your various theories, then add to them a few theories psychology has developed.  I'll also give you your study guide for the quiz on Monday.

BBC Documentary
Today we're going to watch a BBC documentary that explores more of the differences and research into brain differences between the sexes.  While you watch, I want you to keep track of two things in your notes:
  1. A list of differences between the male and female brains (that are backed by research)
  2. What type of research they are doing to discover these differences

HOMEWORK:  
If we don't finish in class today, finish watching the movie before class on Thursday!  (it's below and on the Docs page).

Gender Differences
  1. What are differences between the sexes, psychologically?  Make a T-Chart of male characteristics and female characteristics
  2. Which of the characteristics listed do you think are biological?  Which do you think are because of environment/nurture?
 
Systemizer vs. Empathiser
  1. Empathiser:
    1. Tries to ID other people's emotions and thoughts, respond with appropriate emotion
    2. Intuitively figures out how others are feeling, sensitive to emotions
  2. Systemising
    1. Tries to analyze and explore systems, find underlying rules, drive to construct systems
    2. Intuitively figures out how things work
  3. Take Systemizer test and Empathiser tests.  Score them, and give Lori the results to plot on a graph.
    1. What do you notice about these results?  What patterns do you see in our data?
    2. What questions do you have based on this data?

Violence and the Media Studies

Step 1: Overview

Read this summary of research compiled by the APA (American Psychological Association) on Violence and the Media.  As you read, create a T-Chart.  On one side, list evidence for the view that yes, there IS a link between watching/playing violent media and increased aggressive behavior.  On the other side, list evidence for the view that no, there IS NOT a link between watching/playing violent media and increased aggressive behavior.

Okay, now you need to read one more piece about this.  Continue adding to your T-Chart.  This will be the basis of discussion on Friday, and will be necessary to answer a long-response question on the quiz.  Consider choosing from this list, or find your own!

When you are done reading your chosen article, answer the following questions in complete paragraphs.

This is part of your assessment grade for this unit, and counts as a QUIZ GRADE!  Take your time and think carefully.  I will be looking for complex and careful thinking here.

At the top of the page, list your name and the title of the second article you read.
  1. What was the main conclusion reached by your second article?  How did it contradict or reinforce the perspectives of the APA article we all read?
  2. What is the strongest evidence in support of the position that violent media may cause an increase in aggressive behavior?  Draw on lecture concepts and what you read in your two articles.  
  3. What are the strongest counterarguments to the position that violent media may cause an increase in aggressive behavior?  Draw on lecture concepts and what you read in your articles.
  4. Where do you currently stand on this question (remember, you don’t have to be black and white!)? What do you think is the relationship between violence in the media and aggressive behavior? Explain your response thoroughly, with evidence.

    HOMEWORK:  Finish 4 Aggression paragraphs above.  Share with Lori BEFORE the start of class on MONDAY.
