Hey all!  I am home catching up on grading- please finish up your research!  I will be checking off everyone's research (Parts 1 and 2) on Thursday, so make sure it is complete by that day!

If you already finished Parts 1 and 2, move on to start creating your infographic!

Research Phase 1:
Now, it’s time to start your initial research.  By the end of class, you should have found the following things.  Stuck?  Try this in google:  effects of ________ on the brain.  Make sure you are keeping a running list of the urls you reference in your research notes!
  1. What neurotransmitters does this drug act on?  What do these neurotransmitters control?
  2. What parts of the brain does it impact?  What functions do these parts of the brain control?
  3. What are the physical effects this drug has on the body?
  4. What are 5 really interesting/weird/scary facts about this drug?

Research Phase 2:
  1. Neurotransmission:  Draw the neurotransmission process.  What does it LOOK like in your brain when this drug is working?  Try to represent it visually (hint, go back and look at the diagrams we filled out together!).  Use colors, labels, arrows, multiple drawings to make this clear.
  2. Studies:  Find at least two studies that have been done about this drug.  For each of the studies take notes on:
    1. Title of Study, Researcher Names
    2. Aim
    3. Methods
    4. Independent and Dependent Variables
    5. Findings/Conclusions

HOMEWORK-  FINISH RESEARCH PHASE 1 and 2!!!  DUE THURSDAY!

Directions:
In your groups, you will be looking at three different drug infographics, and  analyzing their quality.  This is to show you what to do (and perhaps what NOT to do!), and to give you ideas for your own infographic.

As a group, choose THREE of the examples linked below.  For each of the three examples, your group should discuss, and each person should individually jot down notes on the following aspects.

Space and Focus:
  1. Where is your eye immediately drawn on this infographic?  What is happening on this piece visually to draw your eye to this point?
  2. Is it clear on here where you should look next?  If not, where does it break down, and why?
Visual Elements:
  1. What is the most effective image/chart/visual on here?  What makes it effective?
  2. Does their color choice match their topic?  What would you change about their color palette?
Text:
  1. How effectively are the images and text integrated?  What on here is the MOST effective integration?  What’s the least effective?
  2. How well did they do with consistent fonts and varied text size?
  3. Is the text minimal?  Where could they cut down on the amount of text on this infographic?

Examples:
  1. Example 1:  The Drugs and Your Brain
  2. Example 2:  Free Your Mind? Your Brain on LSD
  3. Example 3:  Your Brain on Drugs
  4. Example 4:  This is Your Brain on Prescription Drugs
  5. Example 5:  Your Brain on Bath Salts

Synthesis/Application:  Once your group is done, you need to individually write down notes on the following.  SHOW LORI TO MOVE INTO WORK TIME.
  1. Which of the three design aspects (space and focus, visual elements, text) do you think will be most difficult for you?  Why?
  2. What are three things that you saw today that you would like to imitate?  Be specific!
  3. What are three things you saw today that you would like to avoid?  Be specific!
  4. Look back at the rubric for this project (it's on the project handout).  Which category are you most confident about?  Why?  Which one are you most worried about?  Why?

Done?  Plan for your first draft!
  1. What information do you want to include?  In what order?
  2. What visuals will  you use to communicate the key pieces of information?
  3. How will you connect the pieces of information so they tell a cohesive story about the drug?
  4. What is your hook?  The meat? The wrapup?

Hey all- I'm home with a sick baby this afternoon.  Please continue with your drug research!  Check out the Research Resources on the documents page of my DP for some help here!

Emma and Mady- You need to choose a drug.  Here is the list of what has already been chosen.  Please do not choose anything that is already chosen by two people.  Leave a comment on the list of which drug you would like to focus on for this project.
